IG Defence Positions India’s Shahed-Class KAL Drone for Global Export Amid Rising Gulf Tensions

New Delhi: As geopolitical developments across the Gulf continue to reshape global defence priorities, demand for long-range autonomous strike systems is accelerating. Against this backdrop, IG Defence is positioning KAL, India’s indigenous Shahed-class long-range one-way attack drone, for international export opportunities, subject to applicable Government of India approvals.

Recent regional conflicts have highlighted the strategic importance of cost-effective, precision-guided unmanned systems capable of operating deep within contested environments while reducing risks to personnel and significantly lowering the cost of long-range precision strike operations.

Designed and developed in India, KAL is the country’s first indigenous 1,000 km-class long-range one-way attack drone, engineered for deep-penetration missions against high-value strategic targets. The platform integrates long endurance, autonomous navigation, and precision targeting into a cost-effective solution designed to meet the evolving requirements of modern warfare.

KAL belongs to the emerging class of Shahed-136-type long-range one-way attack drones, a category of systems that has transformed contemporary warfare through its combination of extended range, precision strike capability, operational simplicity, and affordability.

Since its emergence in recent conflicts, this class of unmanned systems has reshaped military thinking by demonstrating how autonomous strike drones can deliver strategic effects, challenge conventional air defence networks, and fundamentally alter the economics of long-range precision warfare. Comparable platforms include Russia’s Geran-2 and the United States’ LUCAS.

With an operational range of up to 1,000 kilometres, an endurance of 7–8 hours, and the capability to carry a 50 kg payload, KAL is designed to conduct long-range precision strike missions in contested environments. The platform provides armed forces with a reliable capability to engage strategic targets at extended stand-off distances while maintaining operational flexibility and cost efficiency.

big bang

Long-range one-way attack drones have emerged as one of the defining technologies of modern warfare, enabling militaries to achieve strategic effects at a fraction of the cost of conventional missile systems. Their battlefield effectiveness has accelerated defence modernisation programmes worldwide, with governments increasingly investing in autonomous precision strike platforms capable of supporting deep-penetration operations, strengthening deterrence, and enhancing operational readiness.

As countries across the Gulf and other strategic regions continue expanding investments in autonomous strike capabilities, global demand for sovereign, affordable, and rapidly deployable unmanned systems is expected to grow significantly. Subject to all applicable Government of India export approvals and regulatory clearances, KAL positions IG Defence to contribute to India’s ambition of becoming a trusted supplier of indigenous defence technologies to friendly foreign nations while advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and strengthening India’s position as a global defence manufacturing and export hub.

Beyond KAL, IG Defence has developed a comprehensive portfolio of next-generation defence technologies spanning long-range strike systems, interceptor drones, FPV combat drones, autonomous UAVs, counter-UAS systems, AI-enabled swarm technologies, electronic warfare solutions, tactical robotics, and logistics drones. Together, these capabilities reflect the company’s commitment to building indigenous, mission-ready technologies for the armed forces and allied nations.

Speaking on the development, Bodhisattwa Sanghapriya, Founder and CEO of IG Defence, said, “The future battlefield will increasingly be defined by autonomous, long-range precision strike capabilities. KAL represents an important milestone in India’s journey towards self-reliance in advanced defence technologies and demonstrates our ability to design and develop world-class indigenous systems.”

He added, “As friendly nations continue to modernise their defence capabilities, India is uniquely positioned to emerge as a trusted partner for reliable, affordable, and mission-ready unmanned platforms, subject to all applicable government approvals and export controls. At IG Defence, our vision is to build technologies that strengthen national security while contributing to India’s emergence as a global defence manufacturing and export powerhouse.”
