Russia-Ukraine War: German Foreign Minister Urges India to Leverage its Close Relationship with Russia to Encourage Peace Agreement

New Delhi: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has made a significant statement urging India to leverage its close relationship with Russia to push for a speedy peace agreement in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

Speaking during his visit to India, Wadephul acknowledged that Europe, along with American and Ukrainian partners, is working intensively to end the conflict and ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty. He emphasised the importance of instruments of peace as the foundation for security, freedom, and prosperity, noting security will remain a challenge in the future.

Wadephul expressed appreciation for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where Modi also underscored the need for peace and a cessation of hostilities.

While recognising that India and Europe do not always have complete alignment on the issue, Wadephul highlighted the essential role India can play by using its good relations with Russia to encourage a peace settlement.

He conveyed gratitude for the open dialogue with India and noted the positive development of ceasefire agreements near India, reinforcing regional stability. This appeal reflects Europe’s hope that India will enhance its diplomatic efforts to bring Russia back to negotiations, given Russia’s reluctance to engage despite European and American overtures.

The German minister also remarked that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has shown a strong inclination towards peace, contrasting with Russia’s stance, which remains a major roadblock.

India’s historical defence and economic ties with Russia, particularly in energy imports, position it uniquely as a diplomatic influencer who could help quiet the guns and restore peace in Europe.

Prime Minister Modi’s engagement with President Putin and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, coupled with India’s call for peace and ceasefire, align with the international community’s push for a diplomatic resolution, although India’s approach balances its strategic relations with both Russia and the West.

Germany views India as a key strategic partner not only in this geopolitical context but also broadly across sectors including security, defence, and trade, reinforcing the importance of this partnership in ongoing multilateral efforts for peace and stability.
