Tel Aviv: India has finalised plans and moved forward with an agreement for Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to convert pre-owned Boeing 767 commercial airliners into Multi-Mission Tanker Transport (MMTT) aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved a roughly $900 million to $1.1 billion agreement to convert six pre-owned Boeing 767 airframes. IAI’s Aviation Group is handling the aircraft conversions.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is partnering in the project, with about 30% of the work—including local systems integration, wiring, and structural updates—performed in India.
The new Boeing 767 tankers will replace or supplement the IAF’s aging and maintenance-heavy fleet of Russian-built Ilyushin Il-78 tankers. The aircraft will support both boom and hose-and-drogue refuelling systems for fighters like the Rafale and Su-30MKI, alongside secondary roles for cargo and troop transport. Deliveries are projected to begin around 2030.
Airbus offered its A0330 MMRT but the Indian Ministry of defence preferred the Israeli offer because IAI agreed to transfer part of the conversion work to India.
