Bengaluru: Hical Technologies on September 01 announced the commercial launch and first customer delivery of its indigenously developed Coreless Brushless DC (BLDC) Motor for space applications, strengthening India’s ability to manufacture mission-critical satellite components locally. The product addresses a critical domestic capability gap in a technology category that has traditionally relied on imports.
The motor is built for satellite attitude control systems, the reaction wheels and momentum wheels that keep a spacecraft correctly oriented in orbit, and can be adapted across mission profiles, from Low Earth Orbit and Geostationary satellites through to deep-space and interplanetary payloads. Different sizes and performance ratings extend the platform across satellite classes.
“Hical has always focused on precision-engineered electromechanical systems for mission-critical use. Taking a coreless BLDC motor from design through qualification to commercial delivery, entirely in India, is proof that space-grade motion control can be built here,” said Yashas Jaiveer, Managing Director, Hical Technologies.
He added, “This development builds on our existing space-grade product portfolio and addresses a real supply chain challenge for satellite manufacturers, both in India and internationally. Beyond the product itself, it reflects the depth of engineering, manufacturing, and quality capability that has been built within the company over several years.”
The motor’s key differentiator is its zero-cogging coreless architecture, which eliminates the cogging effects found in conventional electric motors and enables smoother, more precise motion control. It also delivers rapid acceleration and deceleration, low torque ripple, quiet operation, reduced vibration, improved efficiency and enhanced reliability, making it suitable for precision motion control in satellite applications.
The company is seeing demand from Indian and international satellite manufacturers as governments and private players scale investments in constellations, Earth observation, communications infrastructure and national security programmes.
Localising components of this class carries weight beyond a single product line. Attitude control hardware sits on the critical path for almost every satellite mission, and reducing import dependence on it strengthens the resilience of the domestic space supply chain — a stated priority as the sector opens further to private participation.
Beyond the technology, the programme represents the development of specialised domestic capability in a highly demanding segment of the space industry. A multidisciplinary team of 8 engineers, manufacturing specialists, quality professionals and technicians contributed to the product’s development, qualification and production readiness. The effort helped establish expertise across the full product lifecycle, from design and testing through to space-grade manufacturing, further strengthening India’s growing talent base for advanced aerospace and satellite systems.
Hical plans to extend its coreless motor platform and indigenise additional space-grade motion control components, drawing on its precision electromechanical and aerospace manufacturing base.
