Self-Reliance Soars: MoD Bans Import of 405 Defence Items

In a major push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the Ministry of Defence has notified its sixth Positive Indigenisation List, restricting imports on 405 items worth ₹3,070 crore to boost domestic aerospace and defence manufacturing

NEW DELHI. The Department of Defence Production (DDP) has released the notification to significantly cut India’s reliance on foreign suppliers and build a robust home-grown supply ecosystem. Out of the 405 embargoed items, 389 pertain to Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), while 16 are designated specifically for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

The new ban encompasses critical sub-systems, sub-assemblies, Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), specialised spares, components and key raw materials. Moving forward, these critical parts will be developed, tested and procured exclusively from domestic vendors, offering substantial commercial opportunities to Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) as well as private sector defence start-ups.

Key Platforms Covered Across Land, Air and Sea

The sixth Positive Indigenisation List covers operational components across frontline air, land and naval combat systems:

  • Air Platforms: Components and gears for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Tejas), Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), Su-30MKI fighter jets and the AL-31FP engine assemblies.
  • Armoured & Ground Systems: Essential spares for main battle tanks such as the T-72 and T-90, alongside the BMP-II infantry combat vehicles.
  • Missiles & Munitions: Sub-assemblies for Konkurs-M, Invar, and Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) platforms, as well as High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) ammunition.
  • Electronics & Naval Warfare: Advanced radar modules, sonar systems, automated fire control systems and satellite communication (SatCom) equipment.

SRIJAN Portal Driving Import Substitution

All 405 newly notified items have been hosted on the government’s official SRIJAN Defence Portal (srijandefence.gov.in). Each item comes marked with targeted, time-bound indigenisation schedules, enabling private industries to plan research, development and production pipelines efficiently. DPSUs and the Coast Guard will facilitate development through multiple avenues, including the government’s ‘Make’ procedure and in-house innovation schemes.

Launched in August 2020, the SRIJAN portal serves as a direct bridge linking military procurement requirements with Indian manufacturers. By June 2026, the portal had listed over 33,000 defence items for indigenous development, building on the 5,012 items previously restricted through the first five Positive Indigenisation Lists.

The initiative carries a substantial cumulative financial impact across key operational metrics. The newly notified list opens up business potential worth ₹3,070 crore for domestic manufacturers, building on a track record that has seen over 15,700 items successfully indigenised to date.

big bang

Over a five-year horizon, these efforts are estimated to generate import substitution savings of approximately ₹9,000 crore, while domestic Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) procurement orders are projected to reach around ₹10,000 crore.

The Ministry highlighted that systematic import bans are successfully shifting India from being one of the world’s largest arms importers toward a self-sustaining defence manufacturing hub. Beyond import substitution, the domestic sourcing mandate is anticipated to spark fresh capital investments, foster high-tech engineering jobs and accelerate indigenous R&D across private manufacturing clusters.
