Five New Pyro Cartridges Unveiled by DRDO’s HEMRL

New Delhi: DRDO’s HEMRL has successfully developed five different types of Pyro Cartridges specifically designed for underwater applications. These cartridges are essential components used in various underwater systems such as torpedoes, rockets, and decoys, serving critical roles like ignition and triggering.

This handover represents a significant milestone in the indigenous development of underwater armament technology, demonstrating India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence systems. The pyro cartridges were delivered to the Indian Navy in Pune, marking the operationalisation of indigenous high-energy materials in undersea weaponry.

Pyro Cartridges are specialised ignition devices that initiate the propulsion or functioning of underwater weapons and systems. Their reliable performance under harsh underwater conditions is vital for the effective operation of naval weapons like torpedoes and underwater rockets. The cartridges developed by HEMRL meet stringent performance and safety standards required for underwater deployment.

This indigenous development aligns with the broader strategic goal of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India), reducing dependency on foreign suppliers for critical components in naval warfare systems. It also enhances the Indian Navy’s operational readiness and technological edge in underwater warfare.

The successful development and transfer of these pyro cartridges complement other indigenously developed naval products and systems handed over to the Indian Navy by DRDO in recent months. These efforts collectively bolster India’s underwater weapon capabilities and contribute to the modernisation of the Navy’s arsenal.

The induction of these five types of indigenously developed Pyro Cartridges for underwater applications marks a significant step forward in India’s defence manufacturing capabilities, especially for the Indian Navy’s underwater operational systems. It reflects DRDO’s critical role in fostering innovation and advancing indigenous defence technologies.
