New Delhi: Air India has received DGCA approval to implement Electronic Technical Logbooks across its Boeing 787 fleet and begin parallel deployment on its Boeing 777 aircraft. The paperless maintenance system is expected to improve operational efficiency, maintenance management, regulatory compliance and aircraft reliability while supporting the airline’s digital transformation and sustainability goals.
Air India has received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to use Electronic Technical Logbooks (ETL) as the primary technical document for its Boeing 787 fleet, while also commencing parallel implementation across its Boeing 777 fleet.
With the approval, Air India becomes one of the first airlines to implement Electronic Technical Logbooks across its entire Boeing 787 fleet, replacing traditional paper-based maintenance records with a digital platform.
The airline said the move forms part of its wider digital transformation strategy aimed at improving operational performance, safety, reliability and sustainability.
The Electronic Technical Logbook enables real-time information sharing between maintenance engineers and operational teams, improving coordination, accelerating defect reporting and rectification, and enhancing aircraft dispatch reliability.
According to the airline, the platform also strengthens data integrity, traceability and regulatory compliance while providing advanced analytics to support predictive maintenance and engineering decision-making. The transition to paperless documentation is expected to reduce paper consumption and contribute to Air India’s sustainability objectives.
Jeremy Yew Jin Kit, Senior Vice President – Engineering & Maintenance, Air India, said, “The implementation of Electronic Technical Logbooks across our widebody Boeing fleet reaffirms the collaborative work involving engineering, flight operations, digital technology teams, OEM partners and the regulator.”
He added, “Replacing paper-based processes with real-time digital information, we are improving operational efficiency, strengthening maintenance governance, enhancing regulatory compliance and enabling faster decision-making across our engineering and operations teams.”
Air India said the implementation reflects its continued investment in digital technologies to modernise engineering and maintenance operations while maintaining safety and regulatory standards. The initiative is part of the airline’s broader strategy to build a data-driven aviation business focused on operational performance and customer service.
