New Delhi. The Government has appointed NS Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding Anil Chauhan, whose tenure ends on May 30. A highly decorated officer with more than four decades of military service, Lt Gen Subramani is expected to play a key role in advancing military integration, theatre commands and defence modernisation.
The Ministry of Defence announced on Saturday, May 9 that Lt Gen Subramani, currently serving as Military Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), will also function as Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs upon assuming charge.
A veteran infantry officer from the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles, Lt Gen Subramani was commissioned into the Indian Army on December 14, 1985. Over a distinguished career spanning operational, command and strategic appointments, he earned a reputation as a battle-tested and academically accomplished officer.
Before retiring as Vice Chief of the Army Staff in July 2025, he held several critical positions in the Army hierarchy. He served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024 and earlier commanded the Army’s prestigious 2 Corps, one of India’s principal strike formations on the western front.
His operational experience covers both the western and northern borders, as well as counter-insurgency theatres in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. During his service, he commanded 16 Garhwal Rifles in counter-insurgency operations in Assam under Operation Rhino, led 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir, and commanded the 17 Mountain Division in the central sector.
Military analysts view his appointment as significant at a time when India is pursuing greater tri-service integration and restructuring of its armed forces through the proposed theatre command system. As CDS, Lt Gen Subramani will be responsible for promoting jointness among the Army, Navy and Air Force in procurement, operations, logistics and training.
Apart from field commands, Lt Gen Subramani also held several prestigious staff and instructional appointments. He served as Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan, Chief Instructor (Army) at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, and Deputy Director General of Military Intelligence. He was also Chief of Staff of Northern Command, one of the Army’s most strategically important operational commands.
Academically, the officer is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy. He also attended the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the United Kingdom and the National Defence College in New Delhi. He holds a Master’s degree from King’s College, London and an M Phil in Defence Studies from University of Madras.
For his distinguished service, Lt Gen Subramani has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Sena Medal (SM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).
The appointment comes at a crucial phase for India’s military establishment, which is focusing on integrated warfighting capability, indigenous defence production and enhanced coordination among the three services. Defence experts believe Lt Gen Subramani’s extensive operational experience and strategic exposure make him well suited to lead the next phase of reforms in India’s higher defence management.
