G7 Summit: India’s Voice at the Table of Giants

In today's tech-driven age, the G7 Summit provides India the opportunity to share its views on energy security, technology partnerships, and a fair global order that supports the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The countdown has already begun for the 52nd G7 Summit, which will be held from June 15 to 17, 2026, in the scenic town of Évian-les-Bains in France. But before we get excited about this big event, let us first understand in simple terms what G7 actually means and why the whole world keeps a close watch on it.

The term G7 stands for the “Group of Seven.” It is a forum of seven major and powerful countries, namely Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Along with these seven nations, the European Union (EU) also takes part in the meetings as a special participant. However, the EU is not counted as one of the seven official members. Think of it like an honoured guest who always attends the family get-together but is not part of the main family list.

Interestingly, this group was not always called the G7. From 1997 to 2014, Russia was also a member, and during that time the group was known as the G8. But in 2014, after Russia annexed Crimea (a region of Ukraine), the other members suspended Russia indefinitely. After that, the group once again became the G7.

This group was first created in 1975. At that time, the world was going through tough days, including an oil crisis and economic slowdowns, which we call recessions. So, the leading nations decided to sit together and solve these global money problems through friendly talks. One important point to remember is that the G7 is an informal group. This means it works through mutual understanding, without any formal treaty, permanent office, or fixed staff.

Even though it has no headquarters, the G7 still holds huge power. Together, these seven countries plus the EU make up around 40 to 50 percent of the world’s economy, measured as nominal GDP. Surprisingly, they hold nearly half of the world’s wealth while having only about 10 percent of the global population. That is why their decisions on money, trade, and technology affect everyone.

How is the G7 Different from G20 and BRICS?

Now, many people get confused between the G7, the G20, and BRICS. Let us make it simple. The G20, or Group of Twenty, is a bigger group of 20 major economies. It brings together both rich developed nations and fast-growing ones like India under one roof, focusing mainly on global economic stability and financial rules. BRICS, on the other side, is an influential group of developing countries (now expanded) that work together to create more choices in global finance and politics.

The G7 stands out because its members share similar values, such as democracy, human rights, and open markets. This unity helps them take quick decisions, not only on economic issues but also on security, technology, and global challenges. The G7 is also flexible and welcoming. Instead of fighting with growing nations, it tries to work along with them. This is why countries like India, Brazil, and South Africa are often invited as special guests. These developed nations are wealthy, but they too face common worries, like a growing elderly population, costly labour, and the challenge of making rules for new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Why Does the G7 Still Matter in 2026?

Even as new powers rise and competition grows, the G7 remains strong because of its unity and its powerful tools of influence. Economically, the US dollar, the Euro, the British pound, and the Japanese yen are among the most trusted currencies used in world trade. Moreover, these nations hold the largest voting power in the IMF and the World Bank. This gives them a big say in global loans, financial help, and bailout decisions for struggling countries.

In today’s tech-driven age, the G7 often acts as the first responder to new technologies. Since many of the world’s biggest technology companies, especially in the United States, are based in these nations, the group has a major say in how AI, quantum computing, and semiconductors are regulated. Important steps like the Hiroshima AI Process and the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) were born here.

For India, these summits hold special meaning too. As a frequent special guest, India gets a golden chance to share its views on energy security, technology partnerships, and a fair global order that supports the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Finally, the G7 stands strong on security and defence as well. Many members are linked through alliances like NATO and AUKUS, a partnership between Australia, the UK, and the US. Through intelligence sharing and joint defence, these seven friends keep protecting their shared values and global influence.
