NEW DELHI. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has granted an in-principle approval for a ₹500-crore National Military Drone Technology Hub at IIT Kanpur, accelerating India’s self-reliance in cutting-edge unmanned aerial systems and countermeasures.
The strategic clearance, driven by a proposal from the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor framework, aims to establish a full-stack domestic capability for advanced defence technology. The state-of-the-art facility will serve as India’s premier integrated node for designing, testing, and certifying critical military payloads, specialised data links, ground control systems, and advanced counter-drone architectures.
A Full-Stack Defence Sandbox
Rather than focusing solely on basic airframe assembly, the upcoming national hub is engineered to solve complex, high-tier aerospace bottleneck challenges. IIT Kanpur will leverage its extensive existing infrastructure – including its unique 60-year-old operational on-campus airstrip, flight laboratories, and national wind tunnel facilities – to develop end-to-end combat capabilities:
- Advanced Payloads: Engineering specialised electro-optical tracking systems, electronic warfare modules, and weaponised delivery packages.
- Next-Gen Data Links: Developing highly encrypted, jam-resistant communication arrays to secure drone operations in contested environments.
- Counter-Drone Architectures: Building multi-layered interception systems, combining artificial intelligence detection with kinetic and electronic defeat mechanisms.
The IIT Kanpur National Drone Hub operates across three core functional pillars. First, it drives Research & Development (R&D) and Prototyping by developing advanced AI systems, military-grade payloads, and secure data links. Second, the facility manages comprehensive Testing and Validation by utilising its dedicated on-campus airstrip and specialised wind tunnel laboratories to evaluate flight readiness. Finally, the hub accelerates Industrial Scaling by incubating deep-tech defence startups to establish a robust domestic manufacturing pipeline for frontline military supply.
Streamlined Civil-Military Integration
To bypass traditional bureaucratic delays and accelerate deployment timelines, the MoD has appointed the Army Design Bureau (ADB) as the single point of contact. The ADB will act as a direct intermediary, seamlessly linking the technical research emerging from IIT Kanpur with the real-world operational requirements of front-line armed forces.
The initiative directly ties into the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) targets, creating a centralised ecosystem where academic researchers, deep-tech startups, and private defence manufacturers can collaborate under strict airworthiness and military standardisation protocols.
