In a transformative milestone for India’s defence manufacturing sector, Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries Limited and British aerospace pioneer Rolls-Royce announced a strategic partnership to design, develop, manufacture and deliver a sovereign combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) stealth jet programme.
Announced on August 14, 2026, the collaboration directly aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat initiative, aiming to bridge India’s long-standing technological gap in high-thrust military aero-propulsion.
Establishing an Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex
At the core of this strategic intent is the proposed creation of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India. Planned as a national centre of excellence for advanced power and propulsion technologies, the complex will establish end-to-end sovereign capabilities spanning research, design, prototype development, high-precision manufacturing, testing, full serial production and lifetime maintenance.
The venture brings together two industry giants with complementary strengths:
- Rolls-Royce: Contributes over a century of world-leading jet engine expertise, advanced materials science and combat aircraft propulsion engineering (such as its work on Eurofighter Typhoon and GCAP engines).
- Reliance Industries: Delivers massive domestic industrial infrastructure, large-scale manufacturing execution capabilities, composite materials expertise and substantial capital investment.
Highlighting the strategic weight of the deal, Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, emphasised that strategic autonomy requires sovereign control over critical technologies. He noted that the initiative aims to build an enduring national capability to make India self-reliant and globally competitive in propulsion technology.
Concurrently, Tufan Erginbilgiç, CEO of Rolls-Royce plc, highlighted the synergy between Rolls-Royce’s century-long engineering heritage and Reliance’s homegrown industrial leadership, describing the joint effort as a major step toward building a resilient aerospace ecosystem in India.
Powering India’s Fifth-Generation Stealth Jet
The AMCA is India’s flagship indigenous fighter programme, led by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). While initial prototypes are planned to use imported engines, long-term operational success and true strategic autonomy depend on securing a high-thrust, sovereign engine built domestically without foreign export controls or supply chain bottlenecks.
By creating a localised, end-to-end engine ecosystem, the Reliance-Rolls-Royce partnership addresses one of the most complex engineering challenges in modern aerospace. Beyond military aviation, the alliance is expected to create high-skilled aerospace engineering jobs and unlock strategic opportunities across civil aerospace, marine propulsion and next-generation energy systems.
