Bengaluru has taken a monumental step forward in global deep-tech manufacturing. Quantum computing startup QpiAI, has officially inaugurated an eight-inch Quantum Processing Unit (QPU) manufacturing facility in Jakkur, establishing what is now Asia’s largest dedicated quantum chip foundry.
Scaling Deep-Tech Hardware
The new facility represents the completion of the project’s second phase. Operating within Class 100 and Class 1,000 clean rooms, the foundry gives QpiAI end-to-end control over fabrication – from lithography, etching and patterning to final assembly and packaging.
Dr Nagendra Nagaraja, Founder & CEO of QpiAI said, “Conventional semiconductor foundries are not equipped to manufacture all the specialised devices required for quantum computers. Quantum computing today is being held back because there is not enough innovation in manufacturing.”
Pushing Technological Boundaries
The newly operational setup enables QpiAI to manufacture flip-chip superconducting processors containing up to 128 qubits. However, the company’s roadmap stretches far beyond:
- Phase 3 Expansion (2027): Scaled infrastructure to fabricate QPUs packing up to 10,000 physical qubits.
- Proprietary Chips: Production of existing models, including the 8-qubit QVidya, 25-qubit Indus, and 64-qubit Kaveri (transmon-based), along with Yukti, a 9-qubit processor built on fluxonium technology aimed at fault-tolerant logical qubits.
- Q-AI Convergence: Production of peripheral chips, quantum control sensors and research into photonic and semiconductor qubit architectures.
QpiAI operates a 70,000 sq ft R&D campus located in Jakkur, Bengaluru. The company has invested between $20 million and $25 million into the facility, with plans for an additional $10 million to $15 million in capital. Backed by key investors including Avataar Ventures and India’s National Quantum Mission, the campus houses advanced foundry capabilities focused on 8-inch QPU fabrication and flip-chip superconducting technology.
Fusing Quantum and Artificial Intelligence
QpiAI’s vision extends beyond standalone processors. The foundry will supply hardware for proposed Quantum Supremacy Centres (QSCs) – sprawling 300,000-square-foot “quantum AI factories” designed to blend error-corrected quantum computing with AI chip clusters.
By interconnecting high-qubit QPUs with classical AI infrastructure, QpiAI aims to achieve practical quantum advantage, solving optimisation and discovery problems that remain computationally impossible for traditional supercomputers.
Supported by India’s National Quantum Mission and chaired by industry veteran Ajai Chowdhry, the startup is aggressively positioning itself for international expansion, targeting export markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the United States.
