Global Sky Combat: Indian Air Force Deploys to Australia for Massive 19-Nation Exercise Pitch Black

NEW DELHI. The Indian Air Force has deployed a powerful contingent to Australia to participate in Exercise Pitch Black, joining over 100 aircraft and 19 nations in a massive multi-national air combat drill.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is stepping up its global defence footprint by taking part in one of the largest editions of Exercise Pitch Black in northern Australia. This high-intensity, biennial warfare exercise brings together roughly 4,400 military personnel from across the globe to practice complex, large-force employment scenarios in a realistic, simulated combat environment.

The Indian Contingent and Assets

The IAF has dispatched a highly capable multi-role task force to the exercise, ensuring robust participation across multiple operational spectrums:

  • Combat Firepower: The core of the Indian strike element is formed by Su-30 MKI multi-role fighters, renowned for their long-range capabilities and exceptional manoeuvrability.
  • Strategic Airlift: The deployment is heavily supported by C-17 Globemaster III heavy-lift transport aircraft, which managed the logistics and personnel transport across continents.
  • Combat Enablers: To ensure seamless non-stop transit and extended air-time during complex drills, the IAF integrated its IL-78 mid-air refueling tankers.

The deployment highlights the IAF’s rapid mobilisation capabilities, allowing it to project power and execute operations thousands of kilometers away from Indian shores with minimal turnaround time.

Scope of the multi-national drill

Exercise Pitch Black features a massive assembly of global air forces, providing an unparalleled platform for interoperability. 19 nations with 100+ aircraft and 4,400+ personnel are participating in the exercise.

The exercise focuses on highly complex aerial manoeuvres, including offensive counter-air operations, air defence tracking, and tactical coordination between completely different styles of aircraft and communication systems. For the IAF, training alongside advanced air assets from nations like the US, UK, Australia, France, and regional partners offers crucial exposure to contemporary air warfare tactics, electronic warfare defence, and modern network-centric operations.

Deepening Strategic Ties

Beyond the tactical training, India’s participation underscores the rapidly strengthening defence and strategic partnership between New Delhi and Canberra, particularly within the framework of Indo-Pacific security.

By operating side-by-side in Australia’s vast northern territory airspace, the participating nations send a strong signal of collective commitment toward maintaining maritime freedom, open sea lanes, and a stable, rules-based order across the wider region.
