IAF Tests Khagantak-243 Glide Bomb

The Indian Air Force has successfully tested Khagantak-243, an indigenous glide bomb designed to deliver precision strikes from stand-off distances, strengthening India’s push for self-reliant airpower and longer reach capability

The Indian Air Force has successfully conducted a drop trial of the indigenously designed and developed Khagantak-243 Long Range Glide Bomb, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to expand its domestic precision-strike capabilities.

The IAF announced that the trial met all its objectives. The service described the test as an important achievement for both the force and Indian industry, linking the development to the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India and defence innovation initiatives. The trial was conducted on September 2, with the announcement made the following day.

Developed jointly by private defence company JSR Dynamics and state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the Khagantak-243 is a 300-kilograme-class airborne stand-off weapon. It is designed to be released from a fighter aircraft and glide towards its target using aerodynamic wings and control surfaces.

Unlike a conventional free-fall bomb, which follows a largely ballistic path after release, a glide bomb can travel considerable distances without relying solely on gravity. This allows a launching aircraft to attack from outside the immediate engagement zone of some enemy air-defence systems, potentially improving the survivability of aircraft and aircrew.

Reports have described the Khagantak-243 as having a range exceeding 140 kilometres when released from an altitude of approximately 12,000 metres. Other reports have cited a reach of up to 180 kilometres for the Khagantak family, depending on the variant, launch conditions and configuration.

The IAF has not publicly released the precise range, launch altitude, aircraft or target details associated with the latest trial.

The weapon reportedly carries a Mk 81 general-purpose blast-fragmentation warhead containing about 125 kilogrames of explosive fill. Its modular design allows different warhead and guidance configurations to be considered for varying operational requirements.

The Khagantak-243 features a modular warhead architecture, allowing different warhead configurations to be integrated according to mission requirements. Its guidance system combines precision guidance with advanced control surfaces. The bomb has a cylindrical body, swivel-type mid-body glide wings, and five aft control surfaces that assist with navigation and flight control.

JSR Dynamics has supplied the bomb’s airframe and control systems, while BEL has contributed the electronics and guidance package. The weapon’s reported guidance architecture includes inertial navigation and satellite-based navigation for the mid-course phase. Some configurations may also incorporate electro-optical or infrared seekers for improved terminal accuracy.

The Khagantak-243 is a 300-kilogram (661-pound) long-range glide bomb developed collaboratively by JSR Dynamics and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). Designed for precision strikes from stand-off distances, it is intended to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF). The weapon has an operational range of more than 140 kilometers (87 miles) and can be launched from fighter aircraft such as the Su-30MKI.

The Su-30MKI was identified as the initial aircraft platform for flight testing the Khagantak-243. Integration with other fighter aircraft, including the MiG-29K, has also been reported, although the IAF did not confirm which aircraft carried out the latest drop.

BEL had earlier received an order from the IAF for an unspecified number of Khagantak-243 munitions. The value and quantity of that order have not been disclosed. The test therefore represents not only a technical demonstration but also a step towards possible induction and larger-scale production.

For the IAF, the weapon could provide an additional option for precision attacks against fixed targets while reducing the need for fighter aircraft to enter heavily defended airspace. A domestic source of stand-off munitions could also reduce dependence on imports and strengthen India’s industrial base in guidance systems, aerospace controls and advanced warhead integration.

The successful trial comes as India broadens its indigenous portfolio of air-launched weapons. The Khagantak-243’s progress highlights the increasing role of private companies working alongside established defence public-sector enterprises to develop and manufacture systems for the armed forces.

Further trials, evaluations and integration work will be required before the weapon reaches full operational service. However, the IAF’s announcement confirms a major advance in India’s pursuit of longer-range, precision-guided and domestically produced airpower.
