Waterfly’s E-Flying Boat Heads for Sea Trial

IIT Madras-incubated Waterfly Technologies plans to test its electric Hummingbird craft between Chennai and Puducherry by December, a step towards cargo operations along India’s coast and islands

Waterfly Technologies plans to take its electric, water-skimming craft from lake tests to the open sea, with an initial ocean trial scheduled between Chennai and Puducherry by the end of 2026. The 300-kilograme prototype, called Hummingbird, is designed to travel just above the water rather than operate like a conventional aircraft or ferry. The company says the trial will test how the craft performs in ocean conditions as it moves towards commercial cargo use.

The craft uses a Wing-in-Ground (WIG) design. As it flies close to the water’s surface, the interaction between its wings and the ground-or, in this case, the water-can reduce induced drag and improve aerodynamic efficiency. That principle is central to Waterfly’s pitch: a vehicle that combines some of an aircraft’s speed with marine operations, without requiring the infrastructure of a conventional airport.

Before planning the coastal trial, the startup developed a 30-kg prototype over roughly six months to study water take-off and the transition into flight. It then spent another six months scaling the craft to 300 kg. The larger prototype was tested above Kaveripakkam Lake in Tamil Nadu, including at around 1.5 metres above the water to examine ground-effect performance. The ocean trial is intended to move beyond those controlled tests and assess the craft in a more demanding marine environment.

Waterfly unveiled Hummingbird in Chennai on October 11, 2026, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The company’s co-founder Keshav Kumar Choudhary said the planned trial would use the 300-kg craft already tested on the lake. The company has also outlined an ambition to connect Chennai and Kolkata in about three hours, with fares as low as ₹600, though that vision is distinct from the near-term cargo-first plan.

The startup says its initial focus will be coastal and island cargo routes, including logistics for offshore oil fields. It is also exploring whether ships fitted with solar panels and batteries could serve as charging points at sea. Waterfly estimates a range of around 1,000 kilometres on a single charge, with charging stops of about 15 minutes. These figures are company projections; the planned trial will be an important opportunity to evaluate the technology in ocean conditions.

Longer-term plans include a version able to carry one standard 20-foot shipping container, with Southeast Asia identified as an initial target market. The company has also described ambitions for much longer routes as the technology scales. Such plans depend on demonstrating reliable performance, building operational support and meeting applicable certification requirements-not simply extending the prototype’s range.

Certification is a key milestone still ahead. Waterfly is in discussions with classification and certification agencies, including Bureau Veritas, to assess requirements for its cargo craft. It says it is manufacturing the technology in-house at a facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, with capacity to produce two 300-kg craft a week. The startup is targeting cargo transport costs below ₹10 per tonne-kilometre, based on its current design and operating-cost projections.

The sea trial in December will therefore serve as a practical test, not a commercial launch. If the craft can safely take-off, remain stable and operate efficiently in open-water conditions, Waterfly will have a stronger basis for refining its design and pursuing cargo deployment. For now, the company’s larger promises-from low-cost logistics to container-scale transport-remain ambitions whose viability will depend on the results of testing and certification.
