The United States has confirmed for the first time that it has placed an offensive-capable weapon in orbit, a disclosure likely to intensify concerns about the militarisation of space.
Troy Meink, secretary of the US Air Force, said the “on-orbit” weapon was deployed to protect American forces against hostile action.
Speaking at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference, he described the move as necessary to respond to “evolving threats”, but did not reveal when the system was launched or explain precisely what it can do according to the BBC.
The announcement immediately drew criticism from China, which accused Washington of fuelling an arms race beyond Earth. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman urged the US to stop expanding its military capabilities and “preparing for war in outer space”, according to AFP.
The lack of technical detail has left analysts speculating about the weapon’s role. Bleddyn Bowen, a space warfare specialist at the Royal United Services Institute, told BBC that it could be an electronic-warfare platform designed to jam or disrupt radio communications. Such a system could interfere with an adversary’s satellites without physically destroying them. Another possibility is a kinetic weapon capable of striking and destroying satellites.
However, Bowen said that option appeared less likely because smashing objects in orbit can generate clouds of debris, threatening other satellites, spacecraft and astronauts.
The US Space Force has used broad language to describe its “space-control” mission. It says military capabilities may employ kinetic and non-kinetic methods to disrupt, degrade or destroy an adversary’s space assets, for either offensive or defensive purposes, says BBC.
Satellites are central to modern military operations. They support secure communications, navigation, missile-warning systems, intelligence gathering and battlefield surveillance. Disabling them could weaken an opponent without a conventional attack on its territory.
The disclosure comes as Washington seeks to expand its military presence in space. Created in 2019, the US Space Force is responsible for protecting American satellites and developing systems to operate in what the Pentagon increasingly describes as a warfighting domain. The Trump administration has also identified space-based capabilities and interceptor missiles as important elements of its proposed “Golden Dome” missile-defence system.
American officials have repeatedly warned that China and Russia are developing counterspace technologies. These include systems that could interfere with, spy on, control or destroy satellites. In 2021, Russia conducted a direct-ascent anti-satellite missile test that destroyed one of its own satellites and created a dangerous debris field. A military-law analysis described the test as increasing risks to the International Space Station and other spacecraft.
The strategic tension is complicated by gaps in international law. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty prohibits countries from placing nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit, and bans military bases, weapons tests and military exercises on the Moon and other celestial bodies. It does not, however, expressly prohibit every conventional weapon in orbit.
That distinction allows countries to develop and deploy systems that may be military in purpose without directly violating the treaty’s central restrictions. The result is a grey zone in which jamming platforms, surveillance satellites, robotic spacecraft and anti-satellite weapons can be presented as defensive tools while retaining offensive potential.
For now, Washington has not said whether the newly acknowledged weapon has been tested in combat, whether it can physically destroy satellites or whether it forms part of a larger orbital weapons network. Its secrecy may protect operational advantages, but it also risks deepening mistrust.
As the US, China and Russia expand their capabilities, the central question is no longer whether space will be contested, but whether new rules can prevent competition from turning into conflict.
