New Delhi. Indian textile giant, Raymond Ltd is preparing to enter the aircraft-structures business after its subsidiary, JK Maini Global Aerospace Ltd, won a tender to assemble wing and centre-fuselage structures for an indigenous fighter-aircraft programme.
The contract was awarded by a leading Indian aerospace and defence original equipment manufacturer, but Raymond has not disclosed the customer’s identity, the fighter programme involved or the value of the order. The company also did not provide an expected production schedule or estimate of revenue from the arrangement.
The tender marks a significant shift in Raymond’s aerospace ambitions. The group, widely associated with textiles and lifestyle products, has been gradually building an engineering and manufacturing portfolio. Its latest opportunity takes the company beyond precision components and into the assembly of large, safety-critical aircraft structures.
JK Maini Global Aerospace is expected to use the customer’s existing infrastructure for the programme. This approach will enable the subsidiary to develop aircraft-assembly capabilities without committing to major upfront investment in new factories, the company said.
Raymond Group Chief Financial Officer Rakesh Tiwary described the opportunity as strategically more important than its immediate commercial value. He said participation in the programme could help the company establish execution credentials and position its subsidiaries for larger aerospace projects in India and international markets.
Aircraft wings and centre-fuselage sections are among the most technically demanding structures in an airframe. Their manufacture and assembly require tight dimensional accuracy, specialised tooling, advanced inspection systems and rigorous quality assurance. Even minor deviations can affect aerodynamic performance, structural integrity or the final integration of the aircraft.
For JK Maini Global Aerospace, the programme could therefore serve as a practical route into a high-value segment where certification, process discipline and delivery records are essential. Experience gained on the project may help the company compete for future work involving military aircraft, helicopters, transport planes and other aerospace platforms.
The announcement comes as India seeks to expand its domestic defence-industrial base and reduce dependence on imported military equipment. Government policies have encouraged private companies, start-ups and established engineering firms to participate more actively in defence production, research and supply chains.
India’s fighter-aircraft ecosystem has historically been led by state-owned entities, including Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, which manufactures and assembles platforms such as the Tejas light combat aircraft. However, private-sector participation has been growing in areas including aerostructures, avionics, components, engines, precision machining and maintenance.
Large aircraft programmes can create opportunities for tier-one and tier-two suppliers, provided they meet demanding standards on quality, traceability, cybersecurity and delivery reliability. The expansion of domestic suppliers is also intended to improve resilience by reducing the risks associated with overseas procurement and disrupted global supply chains.
Raymond said its aerospace and defence business already serves Indian and international customers. The new tender is expected to help JK Maini Global Aerospace move from component manufacturing towards the assembly of major aircraft structures, broadening its capabilities and potential customer base.
The company’s capital-efficient model could prove useful as it tests its position in the sector. By relying on existing programme infrastructure, Raymond can gain operational experience while limiting the financial risk normally associated with building a dedicated aerospace facility. Future expansion, however, may require investment in specialised equipment, trained personnel and certification systems.
Raymond shares were trading at ₹1,130.25 on the BSE on September 23, rising 1.49% during the day as investors responded to the announcement. The market reaction reflected expectations that the order could open a new growth avenue, although its financial impact remains unclear because key commercial details have not been released yet.
The immediate test will be execution. If JK Maini Global Aerospace delivers the structures to the required standards and timelines, Raymond could use the programme as a springboard into larger aircraft-manufacturing contracts. For a group moving from fabrics to fighter jets, the tender represents an important first step into India’s increasingly competitive aerospace industry.
