safeguarding India’s Eyes in the Sky

The turbulent previous year posed significant challenges for India. However, with resilience, patience, and strategic determination, the country successfully navigated these difficulties while preserving its strategic position. The new year began with renewed vigour, accompanied by a sense of caution. The India–European Union Free Trade Agreement and the strategic defence partnership provided a major boost to India’s international relations. Similarly, the finalisation of the India–US trade deal brought much-needed relief from uncertainties and helped restore momentum to the bilateral partnership.

Looking ahead, India and the United States must focus on broader strategic objectives, resolve outstanding issues, and strengthen a partnership capable of shaping the balance of power in Asia and across the world in the coming decades. India should leverage its growing strategic convergence with the United States to enhance national capabilities and expand its regional influence through a proactive and well-defined strategy. At the same time, India must closely monitor the intensifying nuclear competition among the United States, China, and Russia, particularly in light of reports concerning China’s recent nuclear testing activities and its plans for further developments.

The year 2026 could prove to be a turning point for India. Achieving the ambitious vision of an *Aatmanirbhar Bharat* and *Viksit Bharat* by 2047 requires a strong foundation in high-quality science education, meaningful research, and technological innovation. Without impactful and widely cited scientific research, India’s innovation potential, technological leadership, and economic competitiveness may fall behind. Such shortcomings could also have serious implications for national security, particularly as global geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve. This raises an important question: Can an aspiring global power like India afford to lag behind in scientific research, innovation, and intellectual influence?

One of the major obstacles to India’s national development has been insufficient scientific progress, coupled with a lack of introspection, ethical awareness, and a strong sense of responsibility. The persistent reluctance to integrate moral values and self-reflection into the pursuit of scientific and technological advancement remains a matter of concern. Therefore, India must adopt an interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and skill-oriented education system that combines natural curiosity, observation, scientific evaluation, critical thinking, and analytical abilities. Such a system should be built upon a strong foundation in core academic subjects from the grassroots level, supported by comprehensive planning, effective implementation, and long-term commitment. This integrated approach will be essential for developing a scientifically advanced, ethically responsible, economically competitive, and globally influential India.
