India’s Indigenous Aviation Vaults Forward: Saras Mk II Flight Tests Slated for Late 2027

BENGALURU. India’s homegrown civil aviation ambitions have entered a decisive manufacturing phase, with the highly anticipated 19-seater Saras Mk II light transport aircraft officially scheduled for its maiden flight trials in late 2027.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL) has officially frozen and completed the critical design phase for the Saras Mk II. This pivotal structural milestone transitions the country’s premier indigenous regional transport programme from digital design suites into active prototype fabrication and full-scale assembly.

Engineers are focusing heavily on system integration. While CSIR-NAL will handle advanced composite structures in-house to optimise structural weight, metallic parts and major sub-assemblies are being outsourced to Indian industry stalwarts, including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at its specialised Kanpur facility.

Engineered for Local Realities

The twin-turboprop Saras Mk II is engineered to conquer operating environments that frequently sideline foreign aircraft. Boasting a pressurised cabin, digital glass cockpit, autopilot and command-by-wire flight control systems, the multi-role platform delivers short take-off and landing (STOL) performance.

The aircraft requires a take-off distance of just 670 metres and a landing distance of 900 metres. This spatial economy allows it to operate seamlessly from semi-prepared, short runways, making it a critical asset for high-altitude Himalayan regions and remote airstrips where larger commercial aircraft simply cannot land.

The Saras Mk II features a seating capacity designed to accommodate 19 passengers or carry a maximum payload of 1,710 kg. In terms of performance, the aircraft achieves a maximum cruise speed of 485 km/h, operates at a service ceiling of 29,900 feet and can reach a maximum range of 2,350 km when configured with 8 passengers. To support these capabilities, the aircraft is equipped with a modern avionics suite that integrates a digital glass cockpit and advanced command-by-wire flight control systems.

Powering Strategic and Regional Connectivity

The strategic implications of the project are multi-fold, directly supporting the Indian government’s flagship UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) regional connectivity scheme. By linking Tier-2, Tier-3 and historically isolated destinations via economically viable 19-seater routes, the Saras Mk II provides the ideal missing link in domestic civil aviation.

The project has captured substantial defence interest. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) projecting an initial requirement for at least 15 Saras Mk II aircraft upon successful flight validation. The military intends to deploy the versatile airframe for:

  • Troop and Cargo Transport: Moving personnel to remote border outposts,
  • Coastal Surveillance: Patrolling India’s vast maritime borders, and
  • Cadet Training: Serving as a foundational multi-engine training platform for young transport pilots.

Accelerating Aerospace Self-Reliance

To accelerate the path toward final airworthiness certification, CSIR-NAL will build two distinct prototypes. The late 2027 maiden flight will succeed a rigorous, year-long regime of high-speed taxi trials and ground-based structural validation runs.

By aggressively mobilising a domestic supply chain comprising defence public sector undertakings (PSUs), micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and specialised technology vendors like Paras Defence for the avionics suite, the programme acts as a crucial testbed for local aerospace manufacturing. Beyond providing a versatile regional airliner, a mature Saras Mk II ecosystem marks a monumental leap toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat in high-technology civil and military aviation.
