IAI’s Extended Multi-Sensor MMR Creating Big Interest in Gulf Region

 

Tel Aviv: One of the main Israeli made defence systems that is creating big interest in the Gulf region is the Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) extended Multi-Sensor MMR (MS-MMR) version of the ELTA ELM-2084 radar, according to Israeli defence sources.

The extended Multi-Sensor MMR (MS-MMR) version of the ELTA ELM-2084 radar integrates active and passive sensors thereby delivering higher quality Air Situation Picture (ASP) and weapons support under target saturated, background clutter and severe environmental conditions. The MS-MMR is a single-platform system using multiband sensing, multi spectral sensor suite including an additional higher band radar, IFF, SIGINT, EO/IR, and Launch Detection Sensors (LDS) – providing enhanced detection, classification, identification and tracking of all aerial threats. The system performs cross queuing between the passive and active sensors thereby improving overall performance.

The basic ELTA’s MMR (ELM-2084) is a mobile S-Band radar featuring an advanced 4D Active Electronically Steered Array (AESA) for Air Defence, Surveillance and Artillery Weapon Location (WLR) missions. The MMR is the radar sensor of the “Iron Dome”, “David’s Sling” and “Barak” systems operational and combat proven in Israel and also provides air defence capabilities to other countries around the world.

Eyal Shapira, VP & general manager of ELTA’s air defence & naval systems division told Raksha Anirveda that the upgraded version is capable of detecting a variety of aerial threats from ranges of hundreds of kilometre. “The new version is creating big interest in many countries and there is no doubt that the war in Ukraine is accelerating the process that will lead to contracts.”

The ELTA’s senior official added that the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in ELTA’S radars and a deep learning capability will bring new unprecedented capabilities to the company’s radars.

Last year  HENSOLDT teamed with IAI to supply new radars to the German Armed Forces to modernize their airspace surveillance and build up Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) capabilities. The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has placed an order for the delivery and installation of four long-range radars worth approximately 200 million euros as part of the “Hughes Air Defence Radar Nachfolgesystem” (HADR NF) program.

For this purpose, HENSOLDT has entered into a cooperation in the field of BMD-capable long-range radars with IAI subsidiary, ELTA Systems Ltd. The HADR NF system operates in the S-band, allowing for precise target acquisition compared with other systems. Thanks to IAI’s cooperation, the German customer will receive a combination of a national partner in system integration, certification and long-term support, as well as concept proven, market perfected systems.
