Traffic gridlock may soon become a distant memory for travellers in the United Arab Emirates. In a historic leap for urban mobility, Dubai’s VDX facility has become the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport to receive full regulatory certification, paving the way for the launch of electric flying taxi services in the region.
The regulatory green light was officially granted by the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Following rigorous assessments of the facility’s physical infrastructure, operational protocols and safety-management systems, the approval signals that the frameworks necessary for commercial Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) are officially operational.
Located strategically beside Dubai International Airport, the VDX facility is being developed by UK-based infrastructure developer Skyports in close collaboration with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Skyports holds exclusive rights to construct and operate the city’s vertiports. Once fully operational, the VDX hub alone is projected to handle up to 170,000 passengers per year, functioning as the nerve center for a broader intra-city network.
Unlike temporary landing pads or experimental test sites previously used in urban air mobility trials, VDX is tailored specifically for scaled commercial operations. The four-storied structure spans roughly 3,100 square metres (33,400 square feet) and is equipped with two dedicated take-off and landing pads, rapid-charging infrastructure for electric aircraft fleets and state-of-the-art passenger terminal amenities.
Vertiports are designed specifically to service electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Powered by high-density batteries, eVTOLs combine the vertical lift capabilities of traditional helicopters with significantly reduced noise profiles and zero direct operational emissions, making them ideal for dense metropolitan environments.
VDX represents the first anchor node in a planned four-vertiport network across Dubai, designed to seamlessly connect key business hubs, tourist destinations and transit corridors. The aerial fleet will be supplied and operated by California-based Joby Aviation under an exclusive six-year agreement signed in 2024. With commercial flights targeted to launch in 2026, Dubai is positioned to become the first city globally to offer a fully certified, piloted urban air taxi network.
