New Delhi: Brazilian aerospace major Embraer Defense & Security has joined hands with Mahindra Defence Systems. In a first step towards Make in India, Embraer signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mahindra at the Embassy of Brazil in New Delhi. The collaboration aims to jointly fulfil the acquisition of the C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and signifies a significant advancement in defence capabilities, promising innovation and growth in the aerospace industry.

According to the MoU, the two companies will engage with the end user IAF to identify the next steps of the MTA programme and be in touch with the local aerospace industry here in India in an effort to start developing an industrialisation plan for the project. Focussed on C-390 Millennium, Embraer and Mahindra collaboration will bring the newest technology for military transport aircraft planes to India and also in the aerospace, and make it a possible future centre for the C-390 in the region. As per reports, the IAF is planning to procure Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA).

Highly regarded for its unparalleled mobility, combining high productivity and operating flexibility with low costs, the C-390 Millennium multi-mission tactical transport aircraft have been in operation with the Brazilian Air Force since 2019 and more recently with the Portuguese Air Force in 2023. The C-390 has consistently showcased its capacity, reliability, and performance. With a current fleet accumulating over 11,500 flight hours and operational availability of around 80%, the C-390 Millennium has proven its exceptional productivity. It attained Full Operational Capability status by the Brazilian Air Force in 2023, further validating its capability to undertake various missions effectively.

Selected by several countries including Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, and South Korea, the C-390 Millennium stands out as the most modern military transport aircraft in the market, boasting a payload capacity of 26 tonnes and a maximum speed of 870 km/h (470 knots). Capable of performing a wide range of missions such as cargo and troop transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue, aerial firefighting, and humanitarian aid delivery, the C-390 Millennium offers unparalleled versatility. Additionally, its ability to operate on temporary or unpaved runways further enhances its utility in diverse scenarios.

Moreover, the C-390 can be configured with air-to-air refuelling equipment, designated as the KC-390, enabling it to extend its operational range and endurance. This capability enhances its effectiveness in prolonged missions and reinforces its status as a versatile and reliable military asset. The C-390 Millennium stands as a testament to technological excellence and operational versatility, poised to meet the evolving needs of modern military forces across the globe.

With the capability to undertake missions across extreme environments as well as different terrains, C-390 Millennium can be deployed as part of a quick response team and to carry out other missions when required.

If need be, this aircraft also has the capability to be used as a mid-air refueller, thus the aircraft appears suitable for IAF. In 2022, to meet its urgent requirement of refuelling aircraft mid-air, the IAF was in talks with Airbus for leasing A 330 multi-role tanker transport (MRTT).
