NEW DELHI. In a major transition within the top echelons of the Indian Armed Forces, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit officially assumed charge as the Vice-Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) at the Air Headquarters, Vayu Bhawan, New Delhi. Before taking over his new responsibility, the heavily decorated officer visited the National War Memorial to lay a wreath and pay solemn homage to India’s fallen heroes, after which he was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour.
A Legacy of Strategic Leadership
Air Marshal Dixit transitions into the role of VCAS after a highly impactful tenure as the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC), an appointment he held from May 2025 until June 30, 2026. During his time at the Headquarters – Integrated Defence Staff (HQ-IDS), he became a central figure in reshaping India’s national security calculus.
Most notably, he played a pivotal role in directing Operation Sindoor – the intense 88-hour joint military response launched by the armed forces following the Pahalgam terror attack. Beyond active operations, his leadership at HQ-IDS was defined by foundational institutional updates:
- Joint Doctrines: He steered the formulation and release of 20 distinct joint doctrines and primers aimed at integrating tri-service strategic thinking.
- Military Dialogue Platforms: He conceptualised the high-level RanSamwad defence dialogues.
- Future Planning: He anchored the drafting of the Defence Forces Vision 2047, a long-term roadmap intended to build a technology-driven, theaterised, and future-ready military.
Decades of Aviation Expertise
Commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on December 6, 1986, Air Marshal Dixit brings nearly forty years of elite operational experience to the post of the Vice-Chief. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (Khadakwasla), the Defence Services Staff College in Bangladesh, and the National Defence College in New Delhi.
As a highly accomplished Qualified Flying Instructor and an Experimental Test Pilot, Air Marshal Dixit has logged over 3,300 flying hours across more than 20 distinct aircraft types. His expansive piloting portfolio includes flying front-line fighters and heavy transporters alike, including the Mirage-2000, MiG-21, Jaguar, and the AN-32.
Throughout his long career, his contributions to the force have been recognised with numerous prestigious honours, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), Vayu Sena Medal (VM), and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).
With the military actively pivoting toward theaterisation and joint command structures, Air Marshal Dixit’s deep expertise in tri-service integration is expected to heavily drive the modernisation, indigenous procurement, and operational readiness of the IAF.
