Tata Weighs Expansion of its Operations in Morocco

Tata Advanced Systems is assessing a possible expansion in Morocco, where its new armoured-vehicle plant could gain a second product and help deepen the country’s defence-manufacturing ambitions

Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) is evaluating whether to expand its operations in Morocco, potentially adding the Light Armoured Multi-Role Vehicle (LAMV) to production at its Berrechid facility. The evaluation signals a potential next step for the plant, inaugurated in September 2025 to manufacture the WhAP 8×8 armoured platform.

The Moroccan operation, Tata Advanced Systems Maroc, is the company’s first overseas defence-production facility. Located in Berrechid, near Casablanca, the 20,000-square-metre plant was established to produce the WhAP, developed by TASL and India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation. Its opening was attended by India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Morocco’s Defence Minister Abdelatif Loudyi.

Adding a second vehicle would broaden the site’s production role, but a feasibility assessment is not the same as an approved investment or production commitment. Tata has not publicly confirmed the reported LAMV plan, and details such as a timetable, output, financing or customer orders have not been announced in the available reporting. The distinction matters as Morocco seeks to attract industrial partnerships while building domestic expertise in defence manufacturing.

The existing WhAP programme is designed to serve Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces, with the possibility of supplying other customers in future. The platform is modular and can be configured for roles including infantry fighting, troop transport, reconnaissance, command, mortar carriage and ambulance duties. Its production in Morocco combines Indian-designed technology with local assembly and supplier participation.

Local sourcing is a central measure of the project’s industrial value. At the inauguration, India’s Ministry of Defence said approximately one-third of components and sub-systems would be sourced and assembled locally from the outset, with local value addition expected to rise to 50% in coming years.

The plant is intended to generate employment and create a network of Moroccan engineers, technicians and suppliers. The Indian ministry said the facility had already generated direct and indirect jobs and developed a supplier ecosystem.

big bang

Morocco brings an established manufacturing base to the partnership. Its automotive industry has attracted major international manufacturers and suppliers, while its strategic position between Europe and Africa supports export-oriented production. Morocco manufactured about one million vehicles in 2025, illustrating the scale of the wider industrial ecosystem. That experience does not automatically transfer to defence production, which requires distinct technical standards, security controls and procurement arrangements, but it offers a foundation in manufacturing, logistics and workforce development.

For India, the Moroccan facility extends defence manufacturing beyond its domestic market and provides a foothold in North Africa. For Morocco, local production could support a longer-term goal of strengthening its defence-industrial base and reducing reliance on imported equipment. The Indian government has also described the plant as a potential export hub, although future exports depend on customer demand, approvals and the development of local suppliers.

The potential LAMV addition therefore remains an open question, not a settled expansion. If confirmed, it would indicate that Tata sees a wider manufacturing role for its Moroccan operation. For now, the clearest milestone is the WhAP programme: a functioning industrial partnership whose success will be measured not only by vehicles produced, but by the depth of local sourcing, skills and capabilities it leaves behind.
