Hyderabad: A crucial milestone is on the way for the state’s aviation sector, which will catapult Warangal into the global aviation network, the Mamnoor airport will soon accommodate international aircraft of Boeing and Airbus once the facility becomes operational.
According to sources, Mamnoor airport’s infrastructure will be upgraded to match leading terminals across the country, enabling it to handle aircraft such as A320 and B737 for international routes.
The B737 accommodates up to 215 passengers, whereas the A320 usually seats from 140 to 170 passengers and has a maximum capacity to accommodate as many as 180 travellers. Both Airbus and Boeing aircraft are used by several airlines in India, including Air India, Akasa Air, IndiGo, and SpiceJet.
“The infrastructure, including a new runway, will be developed to accommodate wide-body aircraft like Airbus and Boeing. The initial phase will focus on operating aircraft with around 100-passenger capacity, connecting to major destinations including Mumbai, Delhi, Tirupati, Bengaluru, and Vijayawada,” said a source in the roads & buildings department.
The development plan includes the initial construction of a signal tower, security facilities, and an administrative building, alongside a new runway conforming to the technical and safety standards laid down by DGCA under the Aircraft Act. After the commencement of domestic operations, the airport will undergo further enhancements to meet global standards, facilitating both international passenger and cargo operations.
In addition, runway lighting, approach lighting, and buildings/ structures in which communication and other electronic equipment used for landing and navigation of aircraft will be housed in the proposed airport in Mamnoor, which is around 150 km from Warangal.
A master plan has already been prepared for the operation of A320 type of aircraft, for instrument flight rules (IFR) operations. In fact, Mamnoor airport got NOC for operation in a concession agreement between Hyderabad International Airport Limited and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. As per the agreement, no new or existing airport shall be permitted by the government to be developed as, or improved or upgraded into, a domestic/international airport within an aerial distance of 150 km of the airport before the twenty-fifth anniversary of the airport opening date.
