Morocco Deploys Israeli Barak MX Air Defence System

Tel Aviv: Morocco has deployed the Israeli Barak MX air defence system. In 2022 Morocco signed a $500 million deal with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

Satellite imagery and electronic signatures first revealed deployments near Sidi Yahya el Gharb, northeast of Rabat, late last year.

Morocco began receiving Barak MX components in 2023, with full operational status verified by early 2026. Israeli media outlets detected the system’s electronic signatures, confirming it as an “Iron Dome of the Desert” for southern regions and the Sahara amid drone threats from groups like the Polisario Front.

The Barak MX offers multi-layered defence against drones, aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic threats up to 150 km. It integrates Elta ELM-2084 radars, a combat control centre, and missiles with ranges of 35 km, 70 km, and 150 km.

Slovakia has recently signed a contract for the Barak MX.
