Madurai Airport Begins Round-the-Clock Operations Offering Seamless Travel Experience, Supporting Air Traffic Growth

Madurai: Madurai Airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), has begun 24-hour operations as of October 1. This milestone represents a significant advancement in improving regional and national air connectivity, offering passengers a more seamless travel experience while supporting the growth of air traffic.

The round-the-clock operations will offer greater flexibility for airlines, non-scheduled operators, medical flights, and general aviation, allowing for better planning of aircraft operations and the potential for airlines to establish bases at Madurai Airport. The new schedule will also ensure more effective use of airport infrastructure and resources, according to an official statement.

At an event marking the commencement of 24-hour operations, AAI Chairman M. Suresh emphasised the organisation’s strategic commitment to this transformative upgrade, noting its benefits for the airport and the wider community.

Currently, Madurai Airport handles 248 scheduled flights weekly, with connections to major cities such as Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and international destinations like Singapore, Dubai, and Colombo. With the new round-the-clock operations, scheduled movements are expected to increase to 344 weekly by the winter season of 2024.

The extended operational hours will enable more flights to take off and land, particularly on long-haul routes, enhancing the airport’s appeal to airlines and expanding its network. Increased flight availability will provide more flexible travel options for passengers, boosting convenience and satisfaction. Additionally, the extended hours are expected to stimulate local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and transport services, creating jobs and driving economic growth in the region.

Moreover, the 24-hour operations will improve cargo handling and logistics, attracting businesses reliant on air freight and bolstering the local economy. Enhanced medical facilities will also be more accessible to residents, with better air connections enabling quicker transport for critical care.

The airport will also introduce night parking facilities, allowing airlines to plan night operations and international routes, as many global carriers prefer night-time slots from India. This will position Madurai Airport as a more significant hub, both domestically and internationally.
