New Delhi: A key player in materials science and a constituent of the Murugappa Group, Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI),  is enhancing its support for India’s defence sector through a strategic partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This collaboration aims to advance indigenous defence initiatives and bolster the nation’s capabilities.

“CUMI is well-positioned to manufacture key cutting-edge components that support indigenous product development in strengthening India’s defence capabilities,” said Subbu Venkatachalam, Head of Marketing at CUMI, highlighting the company’s commitment to advancing indigenous defence capabilities.

Specialising in providing essential materials for the defence sector, including ceramic plates for bulletproof vests and tiles for armoured vehicles, CUMI manufactures these critical products in India, from the initial grains to the final assembly. Notably, CUMI’s lightweight ceramic ballistic protection materials, comprising reaction-bonded silicon carbide, high purity alumina, and zirconia-toughened alumina, adhere to rigorous global standards such as the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) ‘Level IV’ and STANAG Level 3. Designed for optimal ergonomics, these materials can be customised into various sizes and shapes, catering to the needs of bulletproof vests and armoured vehicles.

In addition, CUMI plays a vital role in supplying fine powders essential for the production of ceramic thermal spray coatings. These coatings are integral for safeguarding aircraft engines and components against heat and wear, a critical aspect of defence manufacturing and maintenance. CUMI is actively contributing to the development of these coatings through close collaboration with DRDO research entities, further fortifying India’s defence infrastructure.
