Big Bang Boom Solutions: A Defence Unicorn in the Making

In a short span, Big Bang Boom Solutions – a deep tech defence solutions integrator has carved a niche position for itself by bringing in its frugal R&D to the high quality defence technologies.

 

Although one of the youngest startups in Defence, Big Bang Boom Solutions (BBBS) is a deep tech defence solutions integrator, and as its CTO Dr R. Shivaraman said, “primarily our agenda was for developing indigenous technology for use by the Indian Army, Navy and the Air Force. Our primary USP is to bring in the frugal Research and Development we have to the high quality defence technologies that we are talking about.”

The Chennai-based company for two consecutive years in 2018 and 2019 bagged the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) Challenges for See through Armour and Anti-Drone Defence Systems (ADDS) respectively.

BBBS’ core focus is to develop indigenous intellectual property and CTO Dr Shivaraman, is the youngest PhD in Nanotech in India. He completed his Masters in Nanotechnology following his Bachelors (Computer Science), and derives his expertise in a broad range of topics from the time spent in top research facilities such as University of Western Australia, Carnegie Mellon University, SRM University and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre.

The company has in house capabilities to develop critical solutions for the security and defence space and are currently working on a number of indigenous technologies.

In the inaugural episode of Aatmanirbhar Bharat: Makers of Indian Defence – a TV documentary series that was rolled out on ET NOW channel – March 19 and March 20, Dr Shivaraman says, “Drone technology developed by BBBS has definitely raised the bar when it comes to strategies. As drones become more and more popular and people are aware that drones are commonly used, it is very important for us to focus on anti-drone technology.”

BBBS is the only start-up that has won two challenges; receiving a grant of Rs 1.5 Crore per challenge, totalling  Rs 3 Crore, to develop the prototype within 12 months. BBBS is also receiving a Multi-Crore Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) and an international export license as part of the iDEX wins

Elaborating further, he said that drones by virtue of becoming very popular can also be used for terrorism and transportation of drugs. So, a comprehensive anti-drone technology is one of the essential parts or essential components of the defence of the country. So, anti-drone system is able to detect and neutralize at ranges far exceeding 15 km.

Some of the most innovative defence solutions being built by BBBS are T-Series Unmanned Tank Development, Next Generation Hybrid Personal Combat Armour, 360 Advance Battle Interface, Anti-drone defence system among others.

It has also developed 360 view for Armoured Vehicles – iDEX Challenge – The technology developed can be projected onto a helmet worn by an operator in the vehicle or onto a glass within the safe confines of the vehicle. Its shows a 360 degree view around the tank with labels of friendly tanks. It can also mark out distances between two points.
