SIDM Partners with TIIC to Facilitate Defence Manufacturing in the State

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Industrial Investment Corporation Limited (TIIC), a premier State level financial institution and the strategic arm of State Government, in its role to create a defence manufacturing ecosystem, has partnered with the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to proactively catalyse and facilitate defence manufacturing in the State.

Additional Chief Secretary and Chairman and Managing Director, TIIC, Hans Raj Varma IAS,  in the presence of Minister for Industries Thangam Thennarasu, signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on November 1, 2021 with SIDM & CII to jointly work towards the creation of a conducive ecosystem for developing the defence industrial base in the State.

The Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor is being established with the support of the Government of India towards indigenization of defence supplies. The five nodes at Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Salem and Hosur presents an excellent opportunity for the growth of the defence manufacturing ecosystem in the State coupled with the creation of employment opportunities to the youth of the State. The government of Tamil Nadu has taken a pivotal role to make the Tamil Nadu Defence Corridor a huge success and the MSMEs in the TN Defence Corridor project have taken the lead in this regard.

Through this partnership, in the first phase at least 20 champion industries in each of the five nodes will be identified and will be given guidance and support for enhancing their technological capabilities to meet the demands of the Defence Sector. The partnership intends to address the needs of the industry in meeting the defence requirements, skill development, infrastructure build-up and investment promotion in defence manufacturing sector in the State.

Hans Raj Varma IAS, Additional Chief Secretary and Chairman and Managing Director of TIIC, N. Muruganandam IAS, Principal Secretary, Industries Department, Pankaj Kumar Bansal, IAS, CMD, TIDCO; Principal officers of TIIC; Dr S. Chandrakumar, Chairman, CII, Southern Region, Jayant Patil, President, SIDM and other Senior officials of CII/SIDM were also present during the event. Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai graced the occasion and shared his views on making the TN Defence corridor project a grand success. Industry Representatives of Coimbatore, Chennai, Salem, Hosur and Trichy nodes of 5 Defence Corridor were among the participants.
