GRSE Secures Order for Two Coastal Research Vessels from Geological Survey of India

Date:

Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), has received the Letter of Award for the construction of two Coastal Research Vessels (CRVs) from the Geological Survey of India (GSI).

The Letter of Award, received on April 9, 2025, marks another significant achievement for GRSE in the specialised domain of scientific and research vessel construction. These vessels will support GSI’s critical marine geoscientific surveys and coastal exploration initiatives, thereby contributing to the nation’s scientific and resource assessment capabilities.

The project further reinforces GRSE’s reputation as a multi-faceted shipbuilder capable of delivering high-end, mission-specific vessels for both defence and non-defence clients.

Over the years, GRSE has established itself as a pioneer in the construction of diverse vessel types including warships, patrol vessels, survey vessels, ferries, and research ships. This latest order from GSI adds to the shipyard’s expanding commercial shipbuilding order book, following successful contracts for an Ocean Research Vessel for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) and an Acoustic Research Ship for the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), DRDO.

Furthermore, GRSE has secured orders for the delivery of eight multi-purpose vessels to a German Company and thirteen Hybrid Ferries to the Govt of West Bengal. These milestones reinforce GRSE’s growing expertise in building state-of-the-art research platforms and commercial vessels. The shipyard’s legacy in this domain includes the construction of the INS Sagardhwani, a marine acoustic research vessel still in service with the Indian Navy, which recently returned to GRSE for a major refit. GRSE has also delivered advanced Sandhayak Class Survey Vessels, including INS Sandhayak and INS Nirdeshak, under its latest series for the Indian Navy.
