Groundbreaking Initiative: IATA Establishes Civil Aviation Decarbonisation Organisation to Accelerate Aviation Industry’s Sustainability Efforts

Date:

New Delhi: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched a groundbreaking initiative to accelerate aviation’s decarbonisation efforts through the establishment of the Civil Aviation Decarbonisation Organisation (CADO). This newly formed entity will oversee the management of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry, a critical tool designed to enhance the transparency and traceability of SAF transactions within the aviation sector.

CADO is officially incorporated as a not-for-profit organisation based in Montreal, Canada. As the founding member, IATA will continue to play an integral role in CADO’s operations, providing essential technical support and contributing to its ongoing development. Membership in CADO is open to a variety of organisations, including those directly involved in the SAF value chain, governmental bodies with an interest in SAF operations, and other groups indirectly benefiting from the broader environmental impacts of SAF in the aviation industry.

The SAF Registry, which is poised for launch, will serve as a global platform to record and track SAF transactions in a standardised and transparent manner. This system aims to address the complexities associated with SAF supply, which is currently limited and geographically restricted. By connecting airlines with SAF producers and suppliers, the registry will facilitate greater access to sustainable fuel options, regardless of location, and will enable airlines to track the environmental benefits of SAF as they move through the value chain.

In addition to supporting regulatory compliance, the SAF Registry will also allow airlines and corporate customers to claim emissions reductions against voluntary sustainability commitments. This feature is particularly valuable as companies seek to co-finance the cost of decarbonisation and contribute to a more sustainable aviation sector.
