Ponung First Woman from Arunachal to become Lieutenant Colonel

New Delhi: Ponung Doming of Arunachal Pradesh made history when she became the first woman officer from the state to hold the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army.

Doming was promoted from Major to Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army on September 23.

Congratulating her on the Achievement, Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu tweeted, “Major Ponung Doming creates history. She is the first woman Army officer from Arunachal to be elevated to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army. Hearty congratulations and best wishes!”

He said that it was “a proud moment for all of us.” He also tweeted a picture of Ponung standing proud and tall.

A local media report quoted Ponung saying that she is happy and satisfied over her promotion which gives her more responsibility towards the nation.

“I am happy and delighted that the chief minister has also congratulated me which is no less a great motivation,’ she was quoted.

Last month, Wing Commander Shaliza Dhami became the first woman officer of the Indian Air Force to be elevated as the Flight Commander of a flying unit.

Dhami took charge of a Chetak helicopter unit at the Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh on August 26.
