Navantia Begins to Embark the AIP Equipment on the S-83 Submarine

Date:

Cartagena. The Navantia shipyard in Cartagena has begun to embark on the S-83 submarine, the equipment that makes up the innovative Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system. The AIP technology makes the S80 class one of the most advanced conventional submarine models on the market.

This system, unique in the world, generates hydrogen from an alcohol produced sustainably (bioethanol) and stored onboard the submarine. This process is carried out by the Bioethanol Processing System. This hydrogen, combined with oxygen also stored onboard, generates electricity through a fuel cell capable of charging the submarine’s batteries and keeping it submerged two to three times longer than any other conventional submarine.

This AIP system is capable of operating at any depth and in all operational conditions, allowing it to adapt to any Navy mission and making it the most advanced AIP system on the market.

The S80 class submarines are the only 3,000-ton submarines in the world equipped with this system. This system, combined with a design and production system aimed at creating an almost undetectable submarine, opens the door to export opportunities, reinforcing the company’s international positioning and its entire ecosystem of collaborators.

Navantia, with a history of more than 300 years linked to the construction of ships for the Navy, is a state-owned and strategic technology company for the defence of Spain. Its areas of specialisation range from shipbuilding (surface and submarine), to the design and integration of systems with a high technological content and life cycle support and high value-added services.

Additionally, with its brand Navantia Seanergies, it is a global supplier for the development of offshore wind energy and other green energies such as hydrogen.
