Tel Aviv: While UAVs and drones get the most attention in the ongoing war with Iran, the US is using unmanned sea systems on a large scale. US Central Command ( CENTCOM ) deploys Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft (GARC) in the current conflict. These are uncrewed speed boats used for reconnaissance missions.
The 5-metre long vessels, built by BlackSea Technologies, feature angular designs for high-speed manoeuvres and support surveillance or potential strikes. They enhance situational awareness in contested waters without risking personnel. Currently, their role focuses on reconnaissance.
According to the Pentagon, the GARC has patrolled over 2,200 nautical miles in the Middle East, bolstering the US 5th Fleet amid Strait of Hormuz tensions. This marks the first US use of such USVs in active combat, inspired by Ukraine’s Black Sea successes.
Iran has used similar sea drones against tankers, while US strikes have degraded 92% of Iran’s largest naval vessels. No confirmed offensive GARC actions yet, despite capabilities has been confirmed. Past tests faced issues like collisions, but deployment continues.
