Tel Aviv: The shortage in certain types of ammunition after the war with the Hamas broke out on October 7, 2023, is behind the Israeli ministry of defence decision to establish the new ammunition directorate.
The Israeli Ammunition Directorate is designed to centralise and manage Israel’s ammunition stockpiles, strengthen domestic production and secure supply chains for the IDF’s operational needs.
The directorate’s creation follows lessons from the recent wars and supply chain interruptions, aiming to reduce reliance on imported munitions and raw materials. It will oversee the management, production, and storage of various ammunition types, including heavy air munitions and energetic materials essential for Israel’s defence industries.
The directorate will work with Israeli defence companies to expand advanced domestic production lines for energetic materials and bombs. It will serve as a central body for tracking, replenishing, and managing the strategic reserves required for sustained military operations.
Israeli sources said that the initiative was accelerated in response to US munitions shipment delays and the operational strain of ongoing conflicts, highlighting the need for Israeli self-sufficiency.
