Government Plans to Finalise Four Major Defence Deals Worth Over Rs 1.5 Lakh Crore

New Delhi: Before the end of the current fiscal year on March 31, the government plans to finalise four major defence agreements totaling over Rs 1.5 lakh crore. These deals include Rafale –Marine figher jets, additional Scorpene submarines, advanced towed artillery gun systems and light combat helicopters and are aimed to strengthen the armed forces’ capabilities.

A media report quoting a source said that “the Rafale deal is likely to be cleared by the CCS before this month ends, and will be followed by the Scorpene deal soon after.” India will sign a Rs 63,000 crore contract with France for 26 Rafale-Marine fighter jets. These jets, including 22 single-seat and four twin-seat trainer aircraft, will operate from the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier. The deal also includes weapons, simulators, training, and logistical support. It awaits final approval from the cabinet committee on security.

Covering three additional Scorpene submarines, the second agreement with France, worth Rs 38,000 crore is also set to be finalised. These diesel-electric submarines will be built at Mazagon Docks in Mumbai. They will feature air-independent propulsion for extended underwater endurance. The first submarine is expected by 2031, followed by the others annually.

Additionally, India also plans to purchase 156 Prachand light combat helicopters for around Rs 53,000 crore. These helicopters will be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, with 90 designated for the Army and 66 for the Air Force. They are designed for high-altitude operations.

Another deal worth Rs 8,500 crore will cover 307 advanced towed artillery gun systems (ATAGS). Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems will produce these guns. Bharat Forge will manufacture 60%, and Tata will produce the remaining 40%. The army may order more ATAGS in the future.

Citing another source, a media report said, “The aim is to sign all the four deals within this fiscal. Work is also underway to revise the Defence Acquisition Procedure-2020 to further cut down procurement timelines, streamline processes and provide a level playing field to all.”
